The Pendant Wins: Why the Next AI Device for Florida Business Isn’t on Your Face or in Your Pocket

Two years after the first “AI phone killers” flopped, the smartest money in wearables has quietly moved to a $99 clip. We scored pendants, glasses and AI handhelds on what Florida business owners actually need, and the ranking surprised us.

In April 2024, the Humane AI Pin arrived with a $699 price tag, a $24-a-month subscription, a laser projector that beamed text onto your palm, and the confident promise that it would replace your phone. Ten months later, HP bought what was left of the company for roughly $116 million and the pins went dark. The Rabbit R1, a $199 orange gadget that launched the same month, sold well on hype and then largely disappeared from pockets. The first wave of “AI-native” personal devices did not fail because the idea was wrong. It failed because the form factor tried to do the phone’s job with a fraction of the phone’s hardware.
Meanwhile, a quieter category was forming. Small microphones you clip to a collar or wear around your neck, priced like a pair of earbuds, that listen, transcribe and summarize all day and let the phone in your pocket do the heavy lifting. Limitless sold its pendant for $99. Bee sold one for $49.99. Plaud’s NotePin sat at $169. By the end of 2025, two of those three companies had been acquired by Amazon and Meta respectively. The giants weren’t buying phone replacements. They were buying pendants.
For Florida’s more than three million small businesses, from Tampa contractors to Miami wealth advisers to Orlando hospitality operators, the question is not which device is coolest. It is which one earns its place in a workday that already runs on a phone. We built a scorecard to answer that, and we applied a few filters that only matter if you live and work here.
Three form factors, three theories of the future
The AI pendant: the phone’s second pair of ears
The pendant’s theory is modest and, we think, correct: the phone is not the problem, attention is. A phone captures a meeting only if you take it out, unlock it, open an app and hit record. A pendant captures it because it was already on. That single difference, always-on ambient capture at near-zero friction, is the whole product. Everything else (transcription, summaries, action items, “what did the client say about the deposit?”) happens on the phone or in the cloud.
The hardware consequences are favorable. No display means a battery that lasts days, not hours. No camera means a lower privacy temperature in a conference room. No processor of note means a bill of materials that supports a two-digit price. The pendant does one thing well and outsources the rest.
AI eyewear: the highest ceiling, the hardest climb
Glasses are the most ambitious bet and the one with the most credible momentum. EssilorLuxottica reported that Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses passed two million units sold in early 2025 and that sales tripled in the first half of that year. In September 2025 Meta introduced the Ray-Ban Display, a $799 pair with a monocular in-lens screen and a wristband that reads muscle signals for control. Google is bringing Android XR to frames from Warby Parker and Gentle Monster, and Apple is widely reported to be preparing its own glasses.
Glasses can see what you see and show you things, and that combination unlocks scenarios pendants never will: live translation in your lens, a name floating next to the face you’ve forgotten, a technician’s checklist overlaid on the equipment in front of them. But the ceiling comes with a cost. Battery life on camera-equipped frames is measured in hours. Prescription lenses add cost and delay. And a camera pointed at everyone you talk to carries social weight that a clip on your lapel does not.
Two risks deserve more weight than the launch coverage gives them, because together they turn the “sure bet” into a hedge.
Distraction. A display in your line of sight is, by design, something you look at, and the moments when glasses are most tempting are the ones where a glance costs the most: driving between job sites, walking a downtown block, crossing Biscayne Boulevard. Florida already bans handheld texting while driving and prohibits handheld wireless devices in school and work zones (Florida Statutes 316.305 and 316.306).
The law does not yet address in-lens displays, but a driver reading a notification through a lens is not obviously safer than one reading it on a phone, and it is harder for a passenger or an officer to notice. Florida’s metro areas also rank among the most dangerous in the country for pedestrians in Smart Growth America’s Dangerous by Design reports. A device that pulls attention off the crosswalk is a liability here before it is a convenience.
The tell. A pendant is discreet. Camera glasses are a broadcast. Everyone in the room can see them, and increasingly everyone knows what they do. The practical effect is that clients, employees and strangers assume they are being video recorded whether the indicator light is on or not, and they behave accordingly: guarded, less candid, sometimes hostile. For a business relationship built on trust, the glasses stop being an aid and become a source of evidence, an archive of every interaction that can be subpoenaed, leaked or taken out of context, and one that the people across the table never agreed to appear in. The wearer gets the recording. Everyone else gets the exposure.
The AI handheld: the replacement that keeps not happening
The third category is the standalone AI device that wants to be your primary computer. Humane and Rabbit tried it. OpenAI, which paid about $6.5 billion for Jony Ive’s hardware studio io in 2025, is reportedly building a pocket-sized, screenless device for release in the 2026–2027 window. The pitch is that a device designed around a conversational model from scratch will feel more natural than a phone with AI bolted on.
The problem is that the phone is not standing still. Apple, Google and Samsung now ship on-device models, and every “AI-native” feature a handheld demonstrates tends to appear on a $1,000 phone within a product cycle. A device that competes with the phone has to beat the phone’s camera, display, connectivity, battery and app ecosystem simultaneously. No one has done it, and the well-funded attempts so far have been the category’s most expensive lessons.
The phone isn’t a contender in this ranking. It’s the platform. The real question is what attaches to it.
The scorecard
We scored each form factor on six criteria, weighted for a business user who already owns a smartphone and is deciding what to add. Weights reflect what small-business owners tell us matters: not getting embarrassed in front of clients, not charging another thing at lunch, and not paying enterprise money for consumer hardware. Scores are 1–10; the phone appears as an unranked baseline so you can see what each device is measured against.

Two things stand out. First, the phone still scores highest, which is exactly why nothing that tries to replace it has survived. Second, the pendant’s lead over glasses comes entirely from cost, battery and privacy. On raw capability, glasses win. On the odds that a Florida business owner is still wearing the thing six months after buying it, the pendant wins.
The Florida filter
National reviews of these devices tend to ignore four things that are not optional here.
Florida is an all-party consent state. Under Florida Statute 934.03, recording an oral conversation where participants have a reasonable expectation of privacy requires the consent of everyone in it. A pendant that runs all day in client meetings is a legal liability unless you disclose it. Glasses at least have a recording light. This is the single biggest reason pendants lose points on privacy, and the single biggest reason to adopt a disclosure habit if you buy one.
Heat, humidity and sweat. Electronics on the face in August in Fort Myers are a different product than the same electronics in Cupertino. Camera-equipped frames fog, slide and overheat. A pendant under a collar or on a lanyard fares better, though neither is built for a job site at 2 p.m.
Hurricane season and battery. When power is intermittent, a device that lasts four days beats one that lasts four hours. Pendant makers advertise roughly 100 hours of capture; most camera glasses advertise four to eight. For a field adjuster or restoration contractor working after a storm, that gap is decisive.
Everyone here already wears sunglasses. This is the one Florida factor that cuts in favor of glasses. Meta’s Oakley and Ray-Ban frames ship with tinted lenses, and a state where sunglasses are daily equipment is the most natural market in America for smart eyewear. If glasses win anywhere first, it may be here.
One more regulatory note: the Florida Digital Bill of Rights, in effect since July 2024, requires notice when a device offers voice or facial recognition features, and its heaviest obligations fall on very large companies. Small businesses are largely outside its direct scope, but the vendors selling these devices are not, which is worth remembering when you read a privacy policy.
The lawsuits are coming
The strongest argument against camera glasses is not a hunch about etiquette. It is that the legal theories are already written; they are just waiting for the first fact pattern. This is analysis, not legal advice, but the outlines are clear enough for a business owner to plan around.
The driving cases will come first. A driver wearing display glasses rear-ends someone, and discovery pulls the device logs showing a notification rendered two seconds before impact. That is a negligence case against the driver and, if the glasses were company-issued, a vicarious liability and negligent entrustment case against the employer.
The more consequential suit is the one against the manufacturer: did a company design a display that knows the wearer is moving at 45 mph and choose not to lock it? In Lemmon v. Snap (9th Cir. 2021), Snapchat’s “speed filter” was treated as a defective product design that encouraged dangerous use, and the case survived the Section 230 immunity that usually shields tech platforms. A heads-up display that stays live at highway speed is a close cousin of that fact pattern.
Google Glass gave us a preview a decade ago. In 2013 a California driver was ticketed for wearing Glass behind the wheel; the citation was dismissed because the officer could not prove the display was on. That evidentiary gap is now closed, and not in the wearer’s favor: today’s glasses log everything, and the log belongs to the plaintiff’s attorney as much as to the wearer.
The recording cases will cost more. Florida’s wiretap statute is not only criminal. Section 934.10 gives a private right of action with statutory damages, and a business that records client conversations without all-party consent is exposed on every meeting, not just the one that goes wrong. Add facial recognition and you enter the territory that cost Meta $650 million in Illinois under that state’s biometric privacy law and $1.4 billion in a 2024 settlement with Texas.
Meta has said its glasses do not ship facial recognition. In 2024 two Harvard students demonstrated that off-the-shelf Ray-Ban Metas plus public search tools could identify strangers on the street in seconds. The capability exists whether or not it is an official feature.
Then there is discovery itself. Once a business records everything, everything is discoverable. Litigation holds, preservation duties, spoliation sanctions if footage goes missing, and the plain reality that your own archive becomes the other side’s best exhibit. Commercial insurers will notice before the courts do. Expect questions about wearable cameras and in-lens displays on general liability and commercial auto applications within a couple of renewal cycles.
Two honest caveats. First, the danger argument is really about display models. Camera-only glasses without a screen have roughly the distraction profile of earbuds plus a phone call, which is already a settled part of working life. The sharper claim, and the more defensible one, is that in-lens displays are too dangerous to wear on the move. Second, on recording, the pendant may be the bigger liability in Florida. Glasses at least announce themselves; a pendant records covertly, and covert recording is precisely what Section 934.03 punishes. The law treats the visible camera as partial notice and the silent clip as the violation. Any business that adopts a pendant on the strength of this ranking should hold it to the same disclosure standard it would demand of glasses, or the advantage evaporates in the first deposition.
The ranking: best AI-enabled personal device for Florida business users, 2026–2029
1. The AI pendant — weighted score 6.50
Cheap enough to try, durable enough to keep wearing, and built around the one job (never losing what was said) that businesses will pay for immediately. Amazon’s and Meta’s acquisitions of Bee and Limitless mean the category now has owners with the resources to survive. The pendant’s weaknesses, no display and a real consent obligation, are manageable with a phone and a sentence of disclosure. Buy one for the people in your company who spend the day in meetings, on sites or on the road.
2. AI eyewear — weighted score 5.75
The higher ceiling and the more credible long-term platform, with Meta, Google and (reportedly) Apple all committed. Held back today by battery, price, prescription friction and the social cost of a camera on your face. The in-lens display adds a distraction risk on the road and on foot that no other device in this ranking carries, and a visible camera turns every meeting into a recorded one in the eyes of the people in it. Florida’s sunglasses culture is its best opening. Pilot a few pairs for roles where seeing and showing matter: field service, retail floors, hospitality training. Expect to replace them within two product cycles.
3. The AI handheld — weighted score 4.85
The most ambitious idea and, so far, the least successful product. Humane’s shutdown and Rabbit’s fade are cautionary; the OpenAI–io device is the one to watch, but it is unproven and will compete directly with phones that add AI features every year. For a business buyer, this is a category to read about, not to purchase, until a device ships and survives its first twelve months.
What this means for Florida businesses this year
- Start with the pendant, but start with policy. Before the first device arrives, write a one-paragraph recording disclosure and add it to meeting invites and client engagement letters. Florida’s consent law makes this a requirement, not a courtesy.
- Judge the software, not the clip. Every pendant is a microphone; the value is in the summaries, the search and the integrations with your calendar and CRM. Trial the apps on your existing phone first. Several vendors offer phone-only tiers.
- Watch vendor survival. Humane’s customers were left with paperweights. Favor devices from companies with a parent (Amazon, Meta) or a clear revenue model, and check what happens to your data if the service ends.
- Pilot glasses for sight-based work. If your team fixes, inspects, guides or sells things people can see, a small eyewear pilot is worth the money. Buy sunglass variants and keep them out of the August sun for more than a few hours at a time. Write a no-display-while-driving-or-walking rule into the pilot on day one, and tell people they are on camera before you start talking.
- Keep the phone at the center. Every winner in this category is an accessory to the phone. Budget accordingly, and do not sign a subscription that duplicates what your phone’s built-in AI already does.
Where the next three years go
The pendant is winning the present because it accepted the phone’s supremacy and built around it. The glasses are likely to win the further future because they can do something the phone structurally cannot, which is see what you see and show you what you need without a hand or a screen. The most probable outcome is not one device but a stack: a phone in the pocket, a pendant that hears and, for the roles that justify it, glasses that see. The handheld only wins if someone proves that a screenless device can be more than a slower phone.
For a Florida business consumer deciding in 2026, the calculus is simpler than the hype suggests. The device most likely to be on your body in a year, still charged, still paid for and still useful, is the one you can afford to forget you’re wearing. Right now, that is the pendant.
