Physicists Worship Distant Rocks, Mock the Miracles That Surround Them

Modern physics has become remarkably good at describing the far corners of the universe and remarkably dismissive of the mysteries closest to home. The same voices who celebrate a new exoplanet or a refined measurement of cosmic background radiation routinely wave away the soul, the spirit, and the unexplained power of music and beauty as unserious questions. Worse, they have confused their own shorthand, numbers and units invented by humans, for the thing itself. That posture is not rigor. It is a blind spot dressed up as sophistication.
The Cosmos Gets Reverence, Humanity Gets a Shrug
Turn on any science program and you will hear the awe. A gas giant orbiting a star 400 light-years away. A galaxy so distant its light left before the Earth formed. These are, we are told, the true wonders.
Fair enough. They are wonders. But notice what happens when the conversation turns to the wonders we actually live inside of: a mother recognizing her child’s cry in a crowded room, a stranger risking his life for someone he has never met, a symphony that makes a grown man weep in a concert hall. The tone shifts. The awe becomes a smirk. These are “just” chemistry, “just” evolution, “just” neurons firing.
The word “just” is doing a lot of work there, and it is hiding a great deal of ignorance.
Music Is the Test They Keep Failing
Music is the cleanest example. Neuroscientists at McGill University showed more than a decade ago that a peak musical moment releases dopamine in the same reward circuits engaged by food and sex. Physicists and their popularizers cite studies like this as if the case were closed.
It is not. Explaining that dopamine is released when you hear the final movement of Beethoven’s Ninth explains nothing about why a pattern of air pressure waves should feel like grief, or triumph, or homecoming. It tells you where the light switch is. It does not tell you why there is anyone home to see the light.
Philosophers call this the hard problem of consciousness. David Chalmers laid it out plainly in 1995: you can map every physical process in the brain and still have not answered why any of it is accompanied by experience. Thirty years later, physics has no answer. Most of its loudest voices have simply decided the question does not count.
The Number Superstition
Underneath all of this sits a quieter assumption, rarely examined: that if something can be counted, it has been understood.
Look at what a number actually is. A light-year is not a feature of the universe. It is a ruler humans built out of two other human inventions, a year, which is one particular planet’s trip around one particular star, and the speed of light expressed in units we chose. Miles, inches, kilograms, seconds. None of these exist out there. A star does not know it is 400 light-years away. The distance is real; the “400” is a label we stuck on it so we could talk to each other.
This is not a fringe view. Mathematicians have argued for a century over whether numbers are discovered or invented, and the honest answer is that nobody has settled it. The nineteenth-century mathematician Leopold Kronecker quipped that God made the integers and everything else was the work of man. Even he was being generous.
Yet walk into a physics department and you will find people who treat the chalk on the blackboard as if it were more real than the world it describes. The equations are not the universe. They are a compression, a shorthand, a sketch. And every sketch leaves things out. That is what a sketch is for.
Try it with a flower. Write down its stem length in centimeters, its petal count, the wavelength of light its pigment reflects. You will have a page of accurate numbers and you will have described nothing that matters about the flower. The numbers are not wrong. They are simply the wrong kind of thing to capture beauty, the way a menu is the wrong kind of thing to taste. Language at least tries, and fails honorably. Numbers do not even attempt the question, and then their practitioners announce that the question was never real.
That is the sleight of hand. The measurable gets promoted to the only thing that exists, and everything the ruler cannot touch, love, meaning, the soul, the ache in your chest at the end of a piece of music, gets demoted to illusion. But the ruler is the illusion. It is a convention. The ache is what actually happened to you.
Arrogance Presented as Modesty
Stephen Hawking opened The Grand Design by declaring philosophy dead. Lawrence Krauss wrote a book claiming the universe came from “nothing,” then redefined nothing to mean a quantum field governed by laws he could not account for. When a philosopher of physics pointed this out in The New York Times, Krauss responded by mocking the entire discipline of philosophy.
Steven Weinberg, a Nobel laureate and one of the finest physicists of the last century, famously wrote that the more comprehensible the universe seems, the more it also seems pointless. Read that again. A man who spent his life staring at the most intricate order ever discovered concluded that it points to nothing.
This is not humility before the data. It is a philosophical commitment, materialism, smuggled in as a scientific finding. Physics measures what can be measured. It has no instrument for meaning, and it is a category error to conclude from that limitation that meaning does not exist. A ruler cannot detect color. That is not evidence that the world is gray.
Ingratitude Is an Intellectual Failure
The deeper problem is not metaphysical. It is a matter of character. To be handed consciousness, love, music, beauty, moral conviction, and the capacity for wonder itself, and to respond by insisting these are accidents beneath serious notice, is ungrateful. And ingratitude, in an intellectual, is a form of stupidity. It causes you to under-count your evidence.
A physicist who marvels at the fine-tuning of the cosmological constant and sneers at the fine-tuning of a Bach fugue is not being consistent. He is being selective about which miracles he is willing to see.
In Fairness: Not All Physicists
The honest version of this argument has to admit that the best physicists have often been the most humble. Richard Feynman, asked whether science robbed a flower of its beauty, said it only added to it, that knowing the cells and the evolutionary history of the bloom deepened the wonder rather than subtracting from it. Einstein wrote openly about what he called the cosmic religious feeling and considered it the strongest motive for scientific research.
Defenders of the field will also point out, correctly, that science’s refusal to answer questions it cannot test is a discipline, not a dodge, and that “we don’t know” is a more honest answer than any theology can offer. On numbers, they have a strong reply too: the units may be human, but the ratios are not. A bridge stands or falls regardless of whether you calculated it in meters or feet, and the physicist Eugene Wigner devoted a famous essay to the strange fact that mathematics invented for one purpose keeps turning out to describe nature it was never designed for. Something about the world answers to the chalk. They will add that the mockery this column objects to comes from a handful of celebrity scientists, not from the thousands working quietly in laboratories. There is truth in all of that.
But the celebrities are the ones setting the cultural tone, and the tone is contempt. A physics that can find awe in a barren rock at the edge of the visible universe but not in the person sitting across the dinner table has lost the plot. A physics that mistakes its own notation for reality has lost something more. The universe out there is spectacular. The universe in here, the one that can be moved to tears by a string quartet and cannot be reduced to a column of figures, is the one that remains unexplained. That is where the real frontier is, and it deserves reverence, not a shrug.
